Kazakhstan's green hydrogen plant with an annual output of 2 million tons was launched

2023-06-21

On June 20, Kazakh President Bolsandr Tokayev held talks with visiting German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

According to the website of the presidential office of Kazakhstan, the two heads of state discussed the current situation and prospects of the development of bilateral relations during the talks, and the two sides agreed that cooperation in the fields of economy and trade, investment, energy, transport and logistics should continue to be deepened. In addition, the two sides stressed the need to strengthen interaction within the framework of the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Corridor and expand links in the fields of oil and gas, green hydrogen energy and industry.

During the visit, the two heads of state will jointly attend the Kazakhstan-Germany Business Forum. In addition, Steinmeier will also visit the southern Hasi region of Mangiestau to attend the opening ceremony of the Hade Engineering Academy and the launch of the Green hydrogen production plant.

The Energy complex project, which the Kazakh government calls one of the world's largest green hydrogen plants, is funded by the German renewable energy company Svevind Energy Group and will continue to provide clean and sustainable renewable energy for Kazakhstan and Eurasia. According to the plan, green hydrogen plant projects with a capacity of 20 gigawatts (GW) will be built and operated by 2030, and the production of 2 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year will be achieved from 2032, equivalent to one-fifth of the EU's 2030 green hydrogen import target.

On October 27, 2022, Svevind Energy Group signed an agreement worth $50 billion to build 40 GW of wind and solar power plants and produce and export mainly 20 GW of hydrogen from electrolyzed water, producing 2 million tons of green hydrogen annually in Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan's potential for renewable resources is staggering, with some areas producing as much solar power as southern Spain, and its wind power is as strong as South Africa's. There are few other places in the world where you can get such a good combination of solar and wind power at the same time, which is a very good factor for hydrogen production in Kazakhstan.

This view is shared by other major renewable energy producers: On November 15, 2022, the government of Kazakhstan signed a framework agreement with Fortescue Future Industries (an Australian energy company) on the implementation of a green hydrogen production project, which could make Kazakhstan the world's largest hydrogen supplier within seven years.
