Air Liquide supports Paris 2024: will supply hydrogen for 100 Toyota Mirai

2023-07-03

Air Liquide has entered into a partnership with the Paris 2024 Organising Committee (Paris 2024) to participate in the carbon emissions of Paris 2024 as an official supporter of hydrogen energy.

In order to achieve the environmental goals of the event, Air Liquide has signed a partnership agreement with the Paris 2024 Organising Committee to provide renewable hydrogen to power some of the vehicles in the official fleet transporting athletes and officials, a partnership that reflects Paris 2024's aim to "organise a more sustainable Olympic Games".

Contract particulars

Air Liquide will fill several hundred hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai(Paris 2024's official car) with hydrogen that will be renewable, meaning it will be produced by hydroelectrolysis or biomethane-with a guaranteed origin.

Given that transport accounts for a quarter (24%) of global CO2 emissions, the urgent climate situation requires a range of solutions, including renewable hydrogen. Renewable hydrogen offers real advantages for heavy and intensive traffic, such as large range, short refueling times and continuous use.

Developing renewable hydrogen is crucial

As a world leader in hydrogen production, Air Liquide will leverage its more than 60 years of expertise and its low carbon and renewable hydrogen production capabilities to contribute to the decarbonization of Paris 2024. In addition to this, the group is currently launching, piloting and developing some of the most important projects around the world to decarbonize industry and transport. To accelerate the development of hydrogen as part of the energy transition, Air Liquide has committed to increasing the total installed capacity of electrolysis to 3 gigawatts by 2030.

Tony Estanguet, president of Paris 2024, said: "To ensure we achieve our goal of making the Games more sustainable, Air Liquide will provide renewable hydrogen for the vehicles of our athletes and officials, helping us reduce the carbon footprint of the Games. Thank you, Air Liquide, for your contribution as an official supporter of Paris 2024. We are so excited to have you on board!"

Francois Jackow, CEO of Air Liquide Group, added: "Air Liquide and Paris 2024 share a common goal: to implement concrete solutions to address the challenge of climate change. That's what our partnership is all about. In addition to helping decarbonize the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, this partnership will accelerate the widespread adoption of hydrogen to decarbonize heavy and intensive transportation. The challenges are huge, and only by working together will we succeed!"
