$43.7 million! Australia will build a green hydrogen production center

2023-11-06

The Australian government said it would invest A $69.2 million ($43.7 million) in a hydrogen hub that would produce green hydrogen, store it underground and pipe it to a local port with a view to exporting it to Japan and Singapore.

The project is being led by Stanwell, the Queensland government-owned power company, with Japanese companies Iwatani Corporation, Kansai Electric Power Company, Marubeni and Singapore-based Keppel Infrastructure. The project includes a solar electrolyzer, a hydrogen pipeline to Gladstone Port, a hydrogen supply for ammonia manufacturing, and a "hydrogen liquefaction facility and ship loading facility" at the port. At the same time, large industrial consumers in Queensland will also have access to green hydrogen.

Data show that the Australian continent area of 7.69 million square kilometers, for the world's sixth largest country. As of July 2023, Australia has a total population of 26.39 million people, a small population, and developed modern industry and natural resources, which is very suitable for the development of renewable energy.

In 2019, the Australian government issued the National Hydrogen Energy Strategy, which identified 15 development goals and 57 joint actions, and states issued special plans for hydrogen energy development in their jurisdictions. We will strive to become a major player in the global hydrogen industry by 2030, with a green hydrogen production capacity of 30 million tons/year by 2050.

On May 9, 2023, the Australian government announced in its annual budget that it would invest AU $2 billion (US $1.4 billion) to expand its renewable hydrogen industry, accelerate clean energy projects and create a hydrogen superpower.

This project is an important step for Australia to promote the development of the green hydrogen industry, and will also contribute more to the development of the global hydrogen industry.
